Nola Darling

"She's Gotta Have It" A Spike Lee Joint Starring Tracy Camilla Johns (as Nola Darling), Tommy Redmond Hicks, John Canada Terrell, and the films writer and director Spike Lee (as Mars Blackmon).

The film tells the story of an attractive, independent, fun loving and very sexual woman "Nola Darling" (played by Tracey Camilla Johns). She's a layout paste up artist, who loves having sex in her own bed, her birthday is May 19Th, (which she states is the same day as Malcom X) and she has a problem with commitment. Nola simultaneously dates three men (played by Hicks, Terrell, and Lee) who share little in common... except that they all want Ms. Darling to dump the other two and make a commitment to them. How interesting, all three of the men knew about each other and still each of them wanted Nola all to themselves, she even had all three of them over her place for Thanksgiving Dinner (so you know Nola had to be all that in the sack).

There's Jamie (played by Tommy Redmond Hicks) he's "The marrying Guy", the one who loves Nola from head to toe, he's kind-hearted, emotionally evolved, madly in love with Nola and a tad bit possessive. and there's Greer (played by John Canada Terrell) the pretentious yet sexy, self-obsessed male-model, he's in love with Nola & his "high-horse" as well and then there Mars (played by Spike Lee) A true Brooklyn boy at heart, he's definitely crazy about Nola, His sense of humor makes her giggle and his famous Quote "please baby please baby baby baby please" made him even more adorable, Mars is the kind of guy who's juvenile actions and thoughts would usually block him from wanting to be with a girl like Nola but the truth is she's got all of their hearts and has them all turned out.

Nola Darling's Quote: It's really about control, my body, my mind. Who was going to own it? Them? Or me? I'm not a one-man woman. Bottom line.

I love this movie and all of it's characters, it has a real and organic feel to it, which I love. It's Shot mostly in black and white on a limited budget, with a dance sequins scene shot in color which made the movie look even more organic, richer and interesting. "She's Gotta Have It" is arguably one of the most important films of the last 25 years. It helped to usher in not only the new age black women but a new wave of African American cinema, and independent film-making as well, its also Spike Lee's film debut, which was the beginning of a film legend, "She Gotta Have It" is definitely a staple in black cinema.♥ ♥ ♥
