"He met Marmalade down in old Moulin Rouge, Strutting her stuff on the street, She said, Hello, hey Joe, you wanna give it a go?

The song is pretty self explanatory, it tells the story of a promiscuous creole woman know as "Lady Marmalade", who seduces a man she met on the streets of the "Moulin Rouge, Paris" (the original version was in the streets of New Orleans, Louisiana). After their sexual escapade the man has moved on from the experience, yet his memories of their tryst remains vivid when he tries to sleep. Some would say she was working the prow doing the world's oldest profession, prostitution, whatever the case may be, this is still great storytelling.

Originally recorded by the soul-funk girl trio "La Belle" Patti LaBelle, Nona Hendryx and Sarah Dash, in 1974, the song was remade in 2001 for "Baz Luhrmann's" movie and soundtrack entitled "Moulin Rouge" Produced by "Missy Elliott" and "Rockwilder" and recorded by some of the decades most influential artist Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Mya and Pink. With such an Eclectic ensemble of ladies, they were able to blend four different musical elements together "R&B, Rock, Rap and Pop" and with such great artist on the track the song was instantly a number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S. for five weeks from May 26 to June 30, 2001. It was also a number-one hit in the United Kingdom and Australia, introducing the song to a new generation of music listeners, and brought the song's infamous catchphrase "Voulez vous coucher avec moi ce soir" (which means "Do You Want To Sleep With Me Tonight" in French, an unsubtle invitation to sexual intercourse), back into mainstream culture. The 2001 version won Christina Aguilera, Lil Kim, Mya, and Pink each a Grammy for "Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals".

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN WELCOME TO THE MOULIN ROUGE!
The music video was directed by Paul Hunter, all four girls (Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Mya and Pink) performed in lingerie inspired by late 18th century Moulin Rouge cabaret actresses and courtesan's, with a set built to resemble the actual "Moulin Rouge" night club around the turn of the century (1890-1910). The video won the MTV Video Music Award for "Best Video of the Year" and "Best Video from a Film"; it was also nominated for "Best Dance Video", "Best Pop Video", "Best Choreography" by Tina Landon, and "Best Art Direction"
